Joseph Phelps Vineyards

The winery is located east of St Helena in California's Napa Valley. Joseph Phelps (1927-2015), a former building contractor from Colorado, came to Napa Valley to set up a winery. As early as 1973, he acquired a former cattle ranch of around 243 hectares (600 acres) and founded his own winery with Walter Schug the following year. The first "Insignia" vintage was produced in 1974 and came onto the market in 1978.

From 1975 to 1991, a significant proportion of the grapes for the "Insignia" wine came from the renowned Eisele Vineyard (owned by the Eisele family, who gave their vineyard its name). At the time, they were vinified in Joseph Phelps' cellar and marketed under the name "Joseph Phelps Vineyards".
