Johanniterkellerei

The winery in Salquenen (Salgesch) in the Swiss canton of Valais was created in 1913 through the merger of three winegrowers. In 1930, the Kuonen & Grichting wine house built the first winery in Salgesch. The name is derived from the Order of St. John, which operated a pilgrim hostel in Salquenen since 1235. Today the family business is managed in the third generation by Thomas Grichting. The vineyards cover eight hectares of our own property, and grapes are purchased from another 30 hectares. Two thirds of these are red wine varieties, with the main variety Pinot Noir leading the way. Other varieties are Amigne, Chardonnay, Chasselas, Cornalin du Valais, Malvoisie (Pinot Gris), Muscat Blanc, Johannisberg (also Gros Rhin = Silvaner), Ermitage (Marsanne) and Syrah. Under the name of "Johannestrunk", a Fendant (white wine from Chasselas), an Oeil de perdrix (lightly pressed from Pinot Noir) and a Dôle (red wine from Pinot Noir) are produced in addition to some other wines. Other premium wines are "Grande Cuvée" in red (Pinot Noir) and white (Chasselas), and "Grand Cru" (Pinot Noir). Sweet Récolte Tardives (Spätlese) from different varieties complete the range.
