Name or name component of numerous individual sites in the German-speaking area. Examples of the latter are Gutenhölle, Hahnhölle, Höllenberg, Höllenbrand, Höllenpfad, Höllenweg, Katzenhölle, Langhölle, Mainhölle, Muckerhölle, Ritterhölle, Schlosshölle, Schönhölle, Vor der Hölle and Würzhölle. The name probably has less to do with the place of horror, but is mostly derived from the Old High German "Helda" for slag heap or steep slope comparable to the English "Hill". However, it may also refer to climatically hot conditions due to long daily exposure to the sun.

The southeast-facing vineyard with a slope of 5 to 25% is located on the 600-metre-high Teufelsberg. It covers 66 hectares of vineyards with, due to its size, highly variable soils with predominantly slope debris mixed with lime, clay marl, loamy sand and sandy loam.
