Jewel

The white grape variety is a new variety between Kerner x unknown variety according to DNA analyses published in 2012. The paternity of Grüner Silvaner stated in the breeding list turned out to be wrong. Synonyms are Jewel and Weinsberg S 378. The cross was made in 1951 by August Herold (1902-1973) and Helmut Schleip at the Weinsberg State Teaching and Research Institute in Württemberg. The plant variety protection was granted in 1987. The medium ripening vine is resistant to downy mildew, but very susceptible to powdery mildew. It produces fruity, yellow-green white wines similar to Riesling. In Germany, the variety is mainly cultivated in the Rheinhessen growing region. In 2016, 13 hectares were designated with a strong downward trend. Juwel is also a synonym for the grape variety Frühgipfler.
