The institute in San Michele all'Adige (Trentino) was founded in 1874 to promote agriculture in Tyrol. In 2008 it was renamed Fondazione Edmund Mach; see there.

The "Istituto Agrario di San Michele all'Adige" (IASMA) was founded in 1874 by the Tyrolean Parliament in Innsbruck to promote agriculture in Tyrol through a school with an attached research station. The site of the Augustinian canons' monastery in San Michele, which was secularised in 1807, served as the location. The Klosterneuburg Wine Institute(Lower Austria) served as a model.
