The British wine expert Robert Joseph founded the magazine "Wine International" together with Charles Metcalfe in 1983, which was renamed "Wine & Spirit International" in 2005. At the same time, the wine competition "International Wine Challenge" and later the competition "International Spirit Challenge" were launched. Joseph also held the position of chairman, but retired after the 2005 sale of the magazine including the International Wine Challenge to the newspaper publisher William Reed. In the first year, a modest total of 38 wines were judged, today there are up to 10,000 annually, making IWC the largest and also most prestigious event of its kind worldwide and rightly calling itself "The world's largest wine competition" in its subtitle.
