Colloquial term for grape varieties that are cultivated in many wine-growing countries around the world due to their good characteristics or high quality potential. These are often varieties of French origin. However, one could also mean the varieties mentioned under Cépages nobles, which are potentially considered to be the best in terms of quality. In contrast, there are the native or autochthonous varieties which, by definition, often only occur where they were created. However, the two groups cannot be separated exactly and individual varieties are called both international and autochthonous. See the 150 most common ones worldwide under grape variety.
There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
