Indonesia

The huge island nation covers 1.913 million square kilometres and has 225 million inhabitants. It is sometimes counted as part of Oceania and consists of over 17,500 islands, of which over 6,000 are inhabited. The largest are Bali, Kalimantan (Borneo), Java, the western half of New Guinea (West Papua, formerly Irian Jaya), Sulawesi (Celebes) and Sumatra. On the main island of Java is the capital Jakarta with 11 million inhabitants. With over 200 million Muslims, Indonesia has the largest proportion of Islamic population. The islands lie in the area of the tropical monsoon climate. Viticulture is only found on the northern tip of Bali. The island with the capital Denpasar covers almost 5,800 km² with four million inhabitants. The vineyards on slopes near the city of Singaraja are somewhat protected from the high humidity and tropical heat. The only producer there, Hatten Wines, produces semi-dry rosé and sparkling wines from the Isabella variety.
