Neutralising wooden barrel

Lining the inside wall of a wooden barrel with a water- and acid-resistant, as well as taste-neutral layer. This neutralises the barrel and prevents substances contained in the wood from affecting the taste. Resin- or bitumen-based agents (for example "Mammutventur" or "Ebon") are well suited. This is mainly used for small barrels, as well as for transport barrels or barrels intended alternately for red wine and white wine preparation. However, the special effect of a wooden barrel with air exchange during the maturation of a wine is lost (corresponds then to the maturation in a stainless steel tank). See also under barrel ageing and preservation.
