Impigno

The white grape variety comes from Italy. The name means "lazybones" and derives from a winegrower with this nickname who planted or introduced the vine in the 19th century in the Apulian province of Brindisi. According to two DNA analyses carried out in 2010 and 2016, it is the result of a presumably natural cross between Bombino Bianco x Quagliano. However, another DNA analysis carried out in 2019 did not confirm the paternity or identify the variety. The medium ripening vine is resistant to frost and powdery mildew. It produces fresh, simple white wines. The variety is registered in Puglia in the DOC wine Ostuni, but is threatened with extinction. In 2016, the area under cultivation was only two hectares, with a sharp downward trend (Kym Anderson statistics).
