The red grape variety originates from Spain. Synonyms are Aledo Negro, Alicante Imperial, Alicante Negro, Almeria Negra, Almeria Negre, Almeria Nera, Don Mariano, Imperial, Marianas, Marianas Imperiales, Mariano, Moriono, Murciana Negra, Napoleon, Ohanes Negra, Ohanes Negro, Ovan Negro and Regina Negra. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2018, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Ferral (Achladi) x unknown partner. It is not known whether there is a relationship with the white variety Ohanes (Almeria). It is cultivated in very small quantities in the Castilla-La Mancha region, where less than one hectare of vineyards were designated in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
