The red grape variety originates from the Canary Islands(Spain). It is said to have been brought here by the Spanish as early as the 15th century. Synonyms are Almuñeco, Forastera Negra, Icod de Los Vinos, Listán Morado, Muneco Negro, Negra Común, Negra Gruesa, Negra Mulate, Negro Común, Negro Morcillo and Negro Muelle.
