Hydrogen peroxide

Pale blue, in diluted form colourless liquid compound of oxygen and hydrogen, which is slightly more viscous than water. Other names are dioxidehydrogen, perhydrol and hydrogen superoxide. It is a weak acid that acts as a very strong oxidant towards most substances and thus acts as a strong bleaching and disinfecting agent. In winemaking, hydrogen peroxide is used as a disinfectant and steriliser when cleaning containers, for example for bottles before bottling. It is also used in the production of natural corks to prevent cork taint. By mixing it with acetic acid, the sterilising agent peroxyacetic acid is produced. See also other processes and agents under preservation.
