Huxelrebe

The white grape variety (also Alzey S 3962) is a new breeding between White Elbling (Elbling) x Muscat Précoce de Saumur according to DNA analyses published in 2012. The maternal lineage indicated in the breeding list of Chasselas has proven to be incorrect. The crossing took place in 1927 by Georg Scheu (1879-1949) at the State Institute Alzey (Rheinhessen), and the variety protection was granted in 1969. It was named after the vine nursery and winery owner Fritz Huxel (1892-1972), who was involved in cultivation and propagation. The early ripening, very high-yielding vine is resistant to both types of powdery mildew, but sensitive to frost and susceptible to Botrytis. It produces acid-driven white wines with a variety of aromas of apricots, honey, spices, and musk. Due to its special aromatic properties, it is also referred to as a so-called bouquet variety. Because of the sugar-rich berries, it is often used for sweet Prädikatsweine. The variety is cultivated in Germany on 462 hectares and in England on 4 hectares. In 2016, a total of 466 hectares of vineyard area were recorded, showing a strong declining trend (Statistics Kym Anderson). Images: Ursula Brühl, Doris Schneider, Julius Kühn Institute (JKI)
