Huxel Fritz

Fritz Huxel (1892-1972), the German owner of a vineyard and vine school, came from a Huguenot branch of a Burgundian count's family. His father Friedrich had been a wine merchant. From the 1950s onwards, Fritz Huxel experimented with new grape varieties at his winery in Westhofen (Wonnegau, Rheinhessen). In close cooperation with the State Institute for Grapevine Breeding in Alzey (Rheinhessen) he recognised the potential of a new variety created by Georg Scheu (1879-1949) with the breeding number "Alzey S 3962". He tried to spread the breed and won numerous national and international prizes and awards with wines from it. In his honour, the variety was named Huxelrebe.
