The winery is located in the municipality of Villány in the Hungarian wine-growing region of the same name. It was founded in 1998 by Horst Hummel. The vineyards cover 7.5 hectares of limestone loess soils and are planted with the red wine varieties Blauer Portugieser, Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The white wine varieties Hárslevelű (lime-leaf) and Tramini (Gewürztraminer) are also purchased. The vineyards have been cultivated according to organic rules since 2008. The aim is to produce unadulterated, independent wines full of character, which express the characteristics of the grape variety, the soil and the special Villány climate. The fermentation of the red wines is mainly spontaneous and takes place in open fermentation tanks. After fermentation is complete, the wine remains on the skins for two to four weeks for maceration. Then it is drawn off into oak barrels of different age and provenance. There, the wine matures for up to two years, depending on the variety.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
