One of the five wine-growing regions in California (also Northern California Coast). It runs 160 kilometres along the coast of the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco Bay in the south up to Mendocino in the north, in a width of 80 kilometres. The vineyards cover 50,000 hectares. The area has become known as a wine-growing region since the mid-19th century, including the famous Californian areas of Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley.
