Hoheburg

single vineyard in the municipality of Ruppertsberg (Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. It owes its name to a castle complex of the Knights of Ruprechtsberg, which was destroyed in the 14th century. However, the origin of the site goes back to Roman times, as attested by numerous finds. A special exhibit was a sealed barrel jug from the 4th century, which still contained remnants of wine. Vineyards were probably already being cultivated here at that time. The vineyards cover 20 hectares of vines on red sandstone weathered soils. The centrepiece is a plot enclosed by a 1.5-metre-high wall. The varieties Riesling, Pinot Noir and Dornfelder are cultivated. The Bassermann-Jordan, Dr Bürklin-Wolf and Villa Wolf wineries, for example, have shares in the site.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
