The winery is located in the municipality of Unterretzbach near Retz in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Weinviertel. The winery, which is rich in tradition, was already mentioned in documents in 1615. In 1931, Ludwig Hofbauer I began with single-variety planting. Son Edwin Hofbauer bottled the first wine in 1949. Since 2000, the winery has been run by Ludwig Hofbauer II. The vineyards cover 18 hectares in the vineyards Bergen, Bergsatz, Böden, Eisenköpfen, Halblehen, Heiliger Stein, In Feldern, Lebern and Sandgrube. They are 75% planted with the white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer, Gelber Muskateller and Neuburger, and 25% with the red wine varieties Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, Blauburger, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
