Producer description of "Weingut von Hövel"

The winery is located in the municipality of Konz-Oberemmel (Saar area) in the German wine-growing region of Mosel. It was formerly part of the St. Maximin monastery estate, which was secularised under Napoleon's rule. Emmerich Grach bought vineyards from the now state-owned property in 1803 and thus founded the winery. In 1902, it was inherited by his great-granddaughter, who was married to Balduin von Hövel. Since mid-2011, the owner has been his great-great-grandson Maximilian von Kunow, with Albrecht Schmitt acting as cellar master. The vineyards cover 12 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Agritiusberg, Hütte in sole ownership and Rosenberg (Oberemmel), Hörecker in sole ownership (Kanzem), as well as plots in the legendary Scharzhofberg (Wiltingen). They are exclusively planted with Riesling. The wines from Rosenberg and Agritiusberg are marketed as estate Riesling under the name "Balduin von Hövel". The reduced yield averages 55 hectolitres/hectare. The wines are vinified in traditional wooden barrels, mainly fruity. The winery is a member of the VDP.
