The winery is located in the municipality of Bingen-Kempten (Bingen area) in the German wine-growing region of Rheinhessen. The traditional family has been growing grapes here for over 100 years. In the 1960s, Friedel and Renate Hemmes converted the formerly mixed agricultural business to viticulture. Today it is run by Frank Hemmes Felix, and after completing his studies, his son Felix is responsible for the cellar. A vinotheque and a wine school set up in two former classrooms are attached. Throughout the year, the estate organises farm festivals, literary wine tastings, wine walks and events with wine and music.
The vineyards cover 20 hectares of vines around the Rochusberg as well as in the single vineyards Scharlachberg and Schlossberg-Schwätzerchen (Bingen). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Silvaner, Ortega, Huxelrebe and Kerner, as well as the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Dornfelder, Blaauer Portugieser, St. Laur ent, Regent, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The vineyards are cultivated in a natural, environmentally friendly way without synthetic fertilisers and herbicides. The wines are produced with the aim of regional typicity. Depending on the type of wine, they are matured in stainless steel tanks, in large wooden bar rels or in barriques. A sparkling wine is also produced.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
