Hauff Wilhelm

The German poet and editor Dr. Wilhelm Hauff (1802-1827) studied philosophy and theology. Despite his short life he wrote numerous fairy tales (Kalif Storch, Dwarf Nose), satires of the times, novels and drinking songs. His great preference for wine appears as a theme in many of his works, such as "Das Wirtshaus im Spessart", "Phantasien im Bremer Ratskeller" and "Anatomie des Rausches". By describing the high-spirited and spirited sociability and wine bliss in the circle of his drinking companions, he drew a colourful picture of the customs of his time. In his novel "The Man in the Moon" he used the term sparkling wine for the first time in 1827, which then appeared in an encyclopaedia for the first time in 1876. From him comes the quote: "I believe this gender feels that it is no longer worthy of a noble wine".
