Hastings River

Northernmost wine-growing area (GI) of the Australian state of New South Wales with the capital Port Macquarie. It belongs to the Northern Rivers zone. The first vines were planted here in 1837. In the 1930s there was a total decline, only in 1980 the viticulture was revived by John Cassegrain. The climate is humid and relatively warm with sufficient summer rainfall, so that compared to most Australian wine-growing areas no artificial irrigation is necessary. The vineyards cover about 200 hectares of vines. Because of its resistance to rot, chambourcin is the most common red wine variety, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. The main white wine varieties are Chardonnay, Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The most important and dominant winery is Cassegrain.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
