Hartford

The red grape variety originates from the USA. Synonyms are Fertile de Hartfort, Framingham, Hartford de Vivie, Hartford Prolific, Maguire, Seneca and Steele's Seedling. It is an interspecific cross between Isabella x Labrusca wild grapevine. It contains at least genes from Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was discovered and selected in 1849 by the breeder H. Steele in the eponymous town of West Hartford in the US state of Connecticut. Direct descendants or open-pollinated seedlings are the varieties Fredonia, Ives, Plamennyi and Seneca (2). The variety yields red wines with a pronounced foxtone. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
