Pascual Harriague (1819-1894), a winegrower from the French Basque Country, immigrated to Uruguay in 1838. From 1840, he lived in the town of Salto in the province of the same name in the northwest of the country. There he later founded the estate "La Caballada". He is considered an important winegrowing pioneer in this country. Among other things, he introduced French grape varieties, including the Tannat. The variety and the wine made from it were very successful. For this reason, it is called Harriague in Uruguay and Argentina. A stamp was issued in his honour.
