A rather negative or pejorative term for the unpleasant flavour of a wine in the context of a wine review or wine evaluation. The word has different meanings in German-speaking countries. In Bavaria and Austria it tends to mean bitter, in other regions it means sharp or cutting or even sour, although all these adjectives are often used together. In the context of characterising a person, it is understood to mean unfriendly, rude or sharp (sharp tone).
