HADES

The winegrowers' association in the German Württemberg growing region was founded in 1986 as the "Study Group New Oak Barrel". It consists of companies that have dedicated themselves to barrique maturation. The name, which was chosen later, is formed from the initial letters of the five founding companies and alludes to the roasting of the barriques with the name of the Greek god of the underworld (hell). These are Fürst zu Hohenlohe-Oehringen and Sonnenhof, Adelmann, Drautz-Able, Ellwanger Jürgen. Later on, the Weinsberg State Teaching and Experimental Institute was added, which provides scientific support. The main goal of the association was to help the barrique ageing, which was frowned upon in Germany at that time and still was until the mid-1990s, to achieve a better image and recognition through appropriate actions and above all high-quality wines. The HADES seal is only awarded to the best vintages and is granted in the course of a sensory examination by the members. Another association with similar objectives is the German Barrique Forum.
