The winegrowers' association in the German winegrowing region of Württemberg was founded in 1986 as the "New Oak Barrel Study Group" by five wineries that were committed to barrique ageing, which was still rarely used at the time. The name HADES is formed from the initial letters of the five founding wineries and alludes to the roasting of the barrels with the Greek god of the underworld (hell). The State Teaching and Research Centre in Weinsberg, which provides scientific support, was added later:
