Guttation

Term (lat. drop) for the excretion of excess water in plants and fungi by osmotic pressure via the hydathodes (leaf openings) on the leaf teeth or leaf tips. These are special variants of stomata (stomata). The phenomenon occurs in the case of an overabundant water supply and high air humidity, when evaporation for the plant is limited or even impossible. However, the drops produced by this phenomenon should not be confused with the very similar looking dew. See also under vine.
