Grüner Hainer

The white grape variety possibly originates from Austria. About 40 synonyms testify to its age and former wide distribution, some of which are Brenk, Debeli, Grünauer, Grüner Rosszagler, Grünler, Grünhainer, Grünstock, Kerzatna, Kreuzer, Kreuzweinbeer, Krishon, Rossschweif (because of the elongated shape of the grapes) and Velka Krishovatna. The parentage is unknown. Whether there is a connection to the Barthainer variety or perhaps to Heunisch is also unknown. The vine produces white wines with a strong acidity, which is indicated by the numerous names with the attribute "green". In Austria, it used to be frequently represented in the Steirischer Mischsatz of St yrian vineyards. Today, it is still cultivated sporadically in Styria, as well as in Slovenia and Croatia. In 2016, however, no stocks were reported (Kym Anderson).
