Term for the deliberate sowing and/or allowing of suitable plants in the vineyard between the rows of vines. This measure is almost obligatory in the context of organic viticulture in the case of organic or integrated pest management. Greening protects against erosion, promotes the formation of humus, enriches the microbiological soil composition with organic nutrients, creates positive water competition with the vines and thus reduces yields, ensures better water storage and water withdrawal and thus optimum water balance, reduces nitrate leaching, results in lower susceptibility to diseases such as chlorosis, fungal diseases, stalk paralysis and trickle, reduces the need for mineral fertilisers and creates food supply for beneficial organisms such as insects and birds.
