Natural stone container used in viticulture for ageing wines as an alternative to traditional wooden barrels. This is a relatively new trend; such are only used by a few producers. Such containers are made from granite or from the volcanic rock basalt. The wines matured in them are characterised by a mineral tone. The granite barrel shown in the picture on the left was made from a nine-tonne granite block and weighs two tonnes. See also under concrete barrel, as well as lists of relevant keywords under barrel and barrel types.
