Goulburn Valley

Wine growing area (GI) in the Australian state of Victoria, which includes the Goulburn River valley and the neighbouring highlands of the Strathbogie Ranges of Mount Helen. It is part of the Central Victoria zone and has a sub-area called Nagambie Lakes. The main towns are Shepparton and Nagambie. At the southern end of the valley, the river forms side arms with stagnant waters, in the north it flows into the Murray River. The valley area has a hot climate, which is somewhat mitigated by the river. The climate in the highlands is cooler. The vineyards cover 850 hectares of vines. The most important red wine varieties are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Marsanne, the most important white wine varieties Chardonnay, Riesling and Marsanne. There are vines that are over one hundred years old. Well known producers are Château Tahbilk, Mitchelton Vintners and Osicka.
