The white grape variety probably originates from Italy. Synonyms are Culupuntu, Fior d'Arancio, Goldenmuskateller, Moscatello di Vico, Muscato Armeno, Moscato Cipro, Moscato dalla Siria, Moscato di Pasqua, Moscato di Terrracina, Moscato Giallo (second main name), Moscato Sirio, Moscato Siro, Moscato Tardivo, Muscadeddu, Muscat du Pays (Switzerland), Muscatedda (Sicily), Muscat Italy, Muscato de Goloio, Muscat Vert and Muscat Zuti (Croatia).

According to DNA analyses carried out in 2021, the variety originates from a presumably natural cross between Muscat Blanc x unknown parent variety. It must not be confused with the varieties Golden Muscat, Moscatel Amarillo, Moscato di Terracina, Muscat Blanc or Muscat Fleur d'Oranger due to partly identical synonyms or morphological similarities. A direct descendant is the Brazilian new variety Madalena.
