The German viticulture expert Rudolf Goethe (1843-1911) was a significant oenologist (he was not closely related to the famous poet prince Goethe Johann Wolfgang). From the year 1869, he worked as a breeder of table grape and dwarf fruit. In 1874, he was appointed director of the fruit and horticultural school in Brumath near Grafenburg (Alsace) and in 1879 was appointed director of the newly opened "Royal Prussian Teaching Institute for Fruit and Viticulture" in Geisenheim, leading this institute until 1903.

The 1894 published "Handbook of Table Grape Culture" by Rudolf Goethe contains the most important table grape for cultivation in the open and under glass with 150 illustrations and 30 plates. The image shows the variety Muscat d’Hamburg.
