Glera Lunga

The white grape variety comes from Istria-Croatia or from Veneto-Italy. The sometimes confusing synonyms are Glera, Prosecco Lungo, Ribolla Spizade and Tocai Nostrano. In spite of apparently indicative synonyms or morphological similarities, it should not be confused with the varieties Glera (formerly Prosecco), Glera Bela (Pienel), Malvasia Bianca Lunga (Prosecco Nostrano) or Ribolla Gialla (Italy). Until 2009, the officially valid main name was Prosecco Lungo; the change to Glera Lunga has caused confusion; see the relevant history under Glera.

Glera Lunga (Proseccco Lungo) - Weintraube

According to DNA analyses, the three varieties Prosecco Tondo (Prosecco, now Glera), Prosecco Nostrano (Malvasia Bianca Lunga) and Prosecco Lungo (now Glera Lunga), previously considered as varieties of a single variety, are now three separate varieties. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2020, Glera Lunga originates from a presumably natural cross between Vulpea x unknown partner. The variety is cultivated in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia under different names (also mixed with Glera). The varieties cultivated under Glera are mostly Prosecco Lungo (Glera Lunga) and not Prosecco (Glera). This variety, which was almost extinct at the end of the 1980s, has been reactivated by the Conegliano Research Institute. In 2016, 1,450 hectares of vineyards were recorded (Kym Anderson).
