The "Glen Carlou Vineyards" winery is located in the northern part of the Simonsberg in the South African Paarl wine district near the town of the same name. Originally it was part of the property of the Simonsvley, who were the first Dutch settlers to settle in the Cape in the early 17th century. In the 18th century, the area of the present vineyard was named "Skilpadje" (Dutch for turtle) after a vineyard reminiscent of a turtle shell. In 1985, the Lencarlou farm was taken over by Walter Finlayson of Scottish origin and renamed Glen Carlou. It is now run by his son David, who learned the trade in Bordeaux at Château Margaux and in Australia and California. In the meantime, the business was owned by the Swiss company Hess Family Estates.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
