The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Aghina Barda, Cannonao, Girò, Girò Commune, Girò Commune Rosso, Girò del Lanusei, Girò di Spagna, Girò Nero, Girò Rosso di Spagna, Girò Niedda, Niedda Commune, Nieddu Alzu, Zirone and Zirone di Spagna. Some of these are identical in the Girò variety (Giró Nero); nothing is known about a possible genetic relationship and parentage. A reddish berry mutation is Giro Ros. Giró Sardo is a parent of the Callet Negrella variety. In 2016, no stock was recorded under the name Giró Sardo (Kym Anderson).
For me, Lexicon from wein.plus is the most comprehensive and best source of information about wine currently available.
