The DWA, based in Mainz in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, was founded in 1977 and has since then established itself as a significant mediator between science, business and consumers. According to its own definition and objectives, it strives "to convey an understanding of wine on the historical basis that has grown over thousands of years, defining wine as a vital cultural asset rich in tradition". The aim is to inform about the responsible use of wine as a health-promoting luxury food.
To this end, scientific data on the subject of "Wine and Health" will be collected and evaluated worldwide and documented in a database. Own medical and nutritional studies are planned, coordinated and financially supported according to the recommendations of the scientific advisory board. With the help of scientific lecture events and symposia, primarily doctors and other health care professionals are competently informed about the topic "Wine, enjoyment and health". Cooperation partners include the two institutions DWF (German Wine Fund) and DWI (German Wine Institute). See also alcoholism, health and drinking culture.
