Designation for an area unit or site with in the vineyard that continues beyond the boundaries of one district into another. It is characterised by the commonality of soil- and/or microclimate-specific properties. Such cross-border area units are also called Gewann. These are usually qualitatively outstanding vineyards that can extend over two individual vine yards. In the past, this was also used in Germany to designate areas from which wines were made from mixed grapes from neighbouring vineyards, whereby this was limited to "within a maximum radius of 15 km". Today, however, this no longer has any significance under wine law. Overseas (Australia, USA) there is the term generic (Gattungswein) with, however, a slightly different meaning. See also under vineyard area.
