The white grape variety originates from Spain and belongs to the Garnacha group. Synonyms grouped alphabetically by country are Grey Grenache (Australia); Grenache Gris, Grenache Rouge (France); Rosco dos Pinheiro (Portugal); Garnacha Dorada, Garnacha Gris, Garnacha Rioja, Garnacha Roya, Garnacho Rojo, Garnatxa Gris, Garnatxa Roja, Teca(Spain); Piros Grenache, Szürke Grenache (Hungary). Confusingly, the synonym Garnacha Roja is also used for the Alphonse Lavallée variety. Garnacha Roja is a somatic mutation of Garnacha Tinta (theoretically also vice versa) with greyish-reddish berries, which it is very similar to in terms of resistance to disease. It is somewhat more productive than Garnacha Blanca. It produces fruity, rather low-acid white wines with cherry and raspberry flavours.
The Wine lexicon helps me to keep up to date and refresh my knowledge. Thank you for this Lexicon that will never end in terms of topicality! That's what makes it so exciting to come back often.
