The white grape variety originates from Spain and belongs to the Garnacha group. Synonyms grouped by country are Grey Grenache (Australia); Cannonau Grigio (Italy); Garnacha Gris, Grenache Gris, Grenache Rouge (France); Rosco dos Pinheiro (Portugal); Garnacha Dorada, Garnacha Gris, Garnacha Rioja, Garnacha Roya, Garnacho Rojo, Garnatxa Gris, Garnatxa Roja, Teca(Spain); Piros Grenache, Szürke Grenache (Hungary).

The variety is a somatic mutation of Garnacha Tinta with greyish-reddish berries. It should not be confused with the Alphonse Lavallée variety (with the synonym Garnacha Roja).
