The white grape variety originates from Spain and belongs to the Garnacha group. Synonyms grouped alphabetically by country are Grey Grenache (Australia); Grenache Gris, Grenache Rouge (France); Rosco dos Pinheiro (Portugal); Garnacha Dorada, Garnacha Gris, Garnacha Rioja, Garnacha Roya, Garnacho Rojo, Garnatxa Gris, Garnatxa Roja, Teca(Spain); Piros Grenache, Szürke Grenache (Hungary). Confusingly, the synonym Garnacha Roja is also used for the Alphonse Lavallée variety. Garnach Roja is a somatic mutation of Garnacha Tinta (theoretically also vice versa) with greyish-reddish berries, to which it is very similar in terms of resistance to disease. Compared to Garnacha Blanca, it is somewhat more productive. It produces fruity, rather low-acid white wines with cherry and raspberry aromas.
