DOC area for red wines, rosé wines and white wines in the Italian regions of Lombardy and Veneto. The zone includes 25 municipalities in the province of Brescia and 6 in the province of Mantova (both in Lombardy), as well as 44 in the province of Verona (Veneto) to the east of Lake Garda. The Classico area includes the municipalities in the province of Brescia. Here, the designation Vigna followed by the name of the vineyard can be used for grapes from classified vineyards. The geographical indications Moniga, Raffa, Picedo and Mocasina are possible.
The vineyards cover around 31,000 hectares of vines. The mild, sub-Mediterranean climate of Lake Garda balances out temperature fluctuations and favours even grape ripening. Warm days, cool nights and dry summers favour aromatic wines. The soils are of moraine and glacial origin, characterised by calcareous gravel, sand and clay, which ensures good drainage, heat retention and fine minerality.
