Term for a wine defect that manifests itself through a medicinal odour of iodoform and a varnish-like or dye-like taste. Deer, hares, wild boar or birds such as starlings can cause serious damage to young vines in particular by gnawing the stem bark and eating off the shoot tips. This can be prevented by coating the vine trunks with wood tar (a mixture of phenols and phenolic ethers). This substance can enter the tissue and thus the wine via the leaves. Plant sleeves (plant tubes) are therefore used as protection for young plants.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
