The white grape variety (also known as Gamay Blanc) originates from France. It was discovered in 1895 in the municipality of Gy in the department of Haute-Saône by the gardener Émile Gloriod. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Gouais Blanc (White Heunisch) x Pinot. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). It could therefore be described as a white sibling variety of the red Gamay variety. No stock was reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
