The winery is located in the municipality of Herxheim am Berg (Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. The traditional winery was founded as early as 1655, when Caspar Gabel, an immigrant from Tyrol, settled as a cooper. Since studying viticulture and oenology in Neustadt an der Weinstraße and practical experience in Baden, Bordeaux, Burgundy and South Africa, Oliver Gabel has been responsible for the cellar technology since 2014. He runs the winery together with sister Lisa and parents Wolfgang and Rianne Gabel. Wine walks are also organised.
The vineyards cover 21 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Goldberg (Asselheim), Held and Steig (Bissersheim), Steinacker (Kallstadt), and Himmelreich and Honigsack (Herxheim). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Kerner, as well as with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Dornfelder, Blaufränkisch, St. Laur ent and Lagrein.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
