The winery in the Eger region of Hungary was founded in 1993 by the Hungarian oenologist Tibor Gál (1958-2005), when he returned to his homeland after a long stay in Italy. The partners were Marchese Nicolo Incisa della Rochetta, the producer of the Sassicaia, and Burkard Bovensiepen, the owner of Alpina-BMW. Gál, Incisa and Alpina resulted in the company name "GIA". In 2002, after Alpina's departure, the US company Kobrand Corporation (a partner in one of the largest US wine trading companies) joined the company.
