The red grape variety originates from Germany. The parentage Bicane x Trollinger (Schiava Grossa) was only clarified by DNA analyses carried out in 2013. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). It remains unclear whether it is a deliberate cross(new variety) or an open-pollinated seedling (accidental product). In any case, the vine was selected by the vineyard owner and grower Johann Philipp Bronner (1792-1864). No stocks were identified in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
