Special breeding variety (also Freiburg 589-54) created at the State Viticultural Institute of Freiburg (Baden-Württemberg). It originated from a cross made in 1954 by Dr. Johannes Zimmermann (1907-1998) Seyve-Villard 12-481 x Freiburg 153-39 (Pinot Gris x Chasselas Blanc), which in turn were also the results of crosses. The complex crossing is based on genes of the American species Vitis aestivalis, Vitis cinerea and Vitis rupestris, as well as frequent backcrosses with European varieties of the species Vitis vinifera. Some Seibel and Seyve-Villard varieties were involved. The cultivar is characterized by high resistance to fungi (botrytis, powdery mildew, downy mildew and others). The FR 589-54 variety was, for example, a partner in the breeding of the PIWI varieties Donauriesling and Johanniter. It is not used in viticulture, therefore no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
As honorary chairman of the Domäne Wachau, it is the easiest and quickest way for me to access the wein.plus encyclopaedia when I have questions. The certainty of receiving well-founded and up-to-date information here makes it an indispensable guide.
