Foudre

French term for a hollow measure of liquid or a type of cask wine that corresponds to the German Fuder. A type used in Alsace holds 1,000 litres. However, the measure used in Belgium and Luxembourg included other volumes. In different sources also 30 hectolitres (3,000 litres) and more are mentioned. For barrel types there are hardly any wine-legal defaults concerning designation or volume. See also under barrel, barrel types, gauges.
