The white grape variety originates from the Mediterranean region, possibly Italy. Synonyms grouped alphabetically by country are Garbesso, Garbessu, Malvasie, Malvoisie du Douro, Rolle, Rollé, Valentin, Varlentin, Verlentin (France); Carica l'Asino, Favorita, Favorita Bianca, Favorita Bianca di Conegliano, Favorita d'Alba, Favoritia di Alba, Favorita di Conegliano, Formentino, Pigato, Sapaiola, Vermentini, Vermentino Bianco, Vermentino di Gallura, Vermentino Pigato (Italy); Malvasia, Malvasia à Bonifacio, Malvasia Bonifacio, Malvasia de Corse, Malvasia Grossa, Malvoisie à Gros Grains, Malvoisie Corse, Malvoisie de Corse, Verlantin, Varlantin, Vermentinu (Corsica). It must not be confused with the varieties Brustiano Bianco, Carica l'Asino, Drupeggio, Nascetta or Rollo, despite seemingly suggestive synonyms or morphological similarities. In some sources, the Pigato variety (Vermentino Pigato) is described as a mutation of Vermentino.
