The "Istituto Agrario di San Michele all'Adige" (IASMA) was founded in 1874 by the Tyrolean Parliament in Innsbruck to promote agriculture in Tyrol through a school with an attached research station. It is located in San Michele all'Adige (Trentino, Italy). The Tyrol region, which at the time belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, also included South Tyrol, which is now part of Italy. The site of the Augustinian canons' monastery in San Michele, which was secularised in 1807, served as the location. The Klosterneuburg Wine Institute(Lower Austria) served as a model.

The first director was Dr Edmund Mach (1846-1901). He was in charge until 1899 and developed San Michele into an important research and experimental centre. In his honour, the institute was renamed "Fondazione Edmund Mach" (FEM) in 2008 and continued as a foundation.
